Matt the Music Man is more than your typical man from Nova Scotia with a guitar. He's also possibly the only musician around with a pirate hat and a platypus for a sidekick! After writing and performing music for 20 years, Matt became inspired to write children's songs upon the arrival of his first child. Using humour to write about things he enjoyed seemed to strike a chord in young ears. Matt discovered the joys of performing for young children and getting them involved.

Today, Matt has performed many educational shows across the Maritimes and beyond. Guitars, ukulele, banjo, harmonica, kazoo, and other instruments are played, and fun props such as costumes and puppets are used to interact and engage children. Through music and stories, Matt has also learned to teach children about the importance of music, self-confidence and respect.

Two all-original albums have been released by Matt titled, "Everyday Superheroes" (2017) and "Songs For Kids Age 1 to 101" (2014). The albums feature children singers and other locally known musicians such as Heather Kelday, Darrin Harvey and Rick Spinney from the Spinney Brothers. Songs such as “Fat Cat”, “Pat the Platypus”, “The Pirates from Yarmouth”, “The Solar System”, “Everyday Superheroes” and “Little Canadian Animal” among many others have been hits with both children and parents! Matt makes a point to not downplay his music lyrically or musically to children because he understands how smart children are! Both albums are musically diverse, humorous and educational.

The smiles, laughs and voices singing along are the rewards that drive Matt. It was through a fortunate stroke of serendipity that Matt became a children’s musician and now and he’s riding the wave!

Matt the Music Man
By Mike Butler

A few months ago I hosted the Night Kitchen event and Matt The Music Man was performing. He was a complete delight to watch and listen to. Matt was kind enough to give me a copy of his new album “Everyday Superheroes,” a wonderful collection of quirky, delightful songs aimed at younger listeners. I encourage any of you with young kids to run out and pick up a copy. Very reminiscent of the Fred Penner, Sharon, Lois & Bram, and Raffi era I grew up in, Matt has taken all the musical styles he loves and created a fun, educational, and whimsical musical ride for kids of all ages. And with local guest musicians like Darrin Harvey, Heather Kelday, and Rick Spinney, you can’t go wrong!

Matt says his love of music has always been there: “it’s one of those things that was ingrained in me because my parents encouraged it and my father played guitar at home. I grew up on the Beatles and the Beach Boys, which morphed into a love of 90’s rock like The Tragically Hip, which got me songwriting. When I had my own kids it made me remember my love for the old kids entertainers of my childhood so it made sense to explore that genre.”

And if the CD isn’t enough and you want to see Matt in action in front of an audience, read his full bio, or watch some videos, check out his website for upcoming show dates and more at Mattmusic.ca

Matt the Music Man: Songs for Kids Age 1 to 101 Album Review:

Valley Family Fun,

December 03, 2014,

by Laura Churchill Duke

In three words: I love it!

This is a fantastically fun CD for kids and adults. The songs are very catchy with easy, memorable lyrics – especially for kids. One afternoon, I overheard my 8 year old singing the song Fat Cat which has quickly become our favourite.

The lyrics are clever and don’t downplay to children. Children can learn about things such as the solar system, why it’s important to read and even about platypuses! The Twinkle Twinkle Black Sheep song is extremely clever and unique and very fun to dance to!

I would equate Matt the Music Man to Raffi. It’s a CD even adults won’t grow tired of listening to because the music is fun and encompasses many different styles.

If you are looking for something new to add to your music collection, would like to support local musicians, or need a Christmas gift for someone, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Matt the Music Man’s children’s CD. Put a smile on everyone’s face. You won’t be disappointed!
